NEW YEAR'S THEFT

People around the world are celebrating the start of the new millennium. As the year 2000 begins and fireworks are set off in a noisy display, a thief is stealthily climbing up scaffolding outside the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. Under the cover of darkness, he opens a skylight and lowers himself into the building on a rope ladder. As security alarms begin to sound, the robber sets off a smoke bomb that starts the fire alarm and blocks the view of security cameras. Then, he calmly cuts a painting worth $4.8 million from its frame and climbs out of the museum.
